Youth and Scout Programs

The Buggy Museum is pleased to offer several programs for school, home, and organizational use.  Where applicable, each program has Pennsylvania standards for each section.  There are also leader/teacher guides that contain answer keys.  Each program that includes a visit to the Museum is separately priced, please see the details under each heading.

Buggy Town

This program is designed for 3rd to 5th grade students studying Pennsylvania or transportation history.  It is separated into four major parts – spelling, reading and comprehension, math and geography.  Click here to download the program. There is no fee to download this program.

Exploring the Past

This program is designed for 3rd to 8th grade students.  It is a five part program centered on Helen E. Biggs and includes census study, educational history and school exercises and reading and interpreting primary sources.  The program includes visits to New Berlin historic sites and/or the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum. There is no fee to download and use the program, there are fees involved in the visits.

Girl Scout

There are programs for the following badges: Celebrating Community (Brownie), Playing in the Past (Junior), Field Day (Cadette), and Traveler (Senior).  The Museum maintains a list for Bronze, Silver, and Gold award projects.

Brownie – Citizen Celebrating Community

Take a walking tour to learn about some of the founding citizens and important buildings in Mifflinburg.  The walk takes about 30 minutes.  There is no fee to download and use this tour. Click here to download walk.  If you wish to have a guide who can answer questions and add to the tour, there is a $20.00 fee.

Junior - Playing in the Past

Come visit the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum and explore the chores done by the average housewife in the late 19th / early 20th century.  Admission is $1.00 for a 20 minute tour; $5.00 for a hands-on program.

Ring Around The Mulberry Bush

The chorus of this children’s song teaches a lot about the chores that a woman did.  In the Amish and Mennonite communities, the lyrics still ring true.  Using the Heiss House, the group will learn about the chores done each day – washing clothes, baking bread, cleaning the house.  The tour takes about 20 minutes in the first floor of the House.  Reservations are required.  Admission is $1.00 per person.

Becoming Tootsy

Helen Elizabeth Smith Biggs was the daughter of Rev. Samuel Smith and Helen Zeibach Smith.  She married the Rev. Joseph O’Neal Biggs.  Helen Elizabeth was called Tootsy by her family, while Joseph O’Neal was called Olie.  As a Methodist minister, Olie moved from church to church every five to seven years. As his wife, Tootsy would make a home wherever they were assigned.  Come to the Museum to try your hand at Tootsy’s chores.  Dress up in reproduction clothing, do some laundry, iron some clothes, and try your hand at sewing and other chores.

The hands-on activity takes at least one hour and costs $5.00 for each participant (adults are not charged, but also not provided with clothing or materials unless requested).  This program is offered during the summer only and reservations are required.

Cadette - Field Day

Come visit the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum for some entertainments. This is a hands-on activity.  The girls will dress up in reproduction clothing, enjoy a tea party and learn to play the historic card game, Cinch.  Charge for this program is $5.00 per person, and is offered year round.  Reservations are required.

During the program, the girls will be introduced to Anna Heiss, the buggy maker’s wife.  Anna served as a midwife, worked for her husband as a trimmer or seamstress, and played the organ for a church she and William helped to start.  During the program we’ll talk about Anna’s life, the Progressive Era and some of the advances made by women during this time.

Senior  - Traveler

This is a scavenger walk.  You will receive information at specified locations, that information will allow you to dig deeper into the lives of Mifflinburg’s past citizens.  You will need to begin at the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum. There is no charge for this program, however be aware that the scavenger hunt will lead you to businesses within the town, you may not be able to complete the walk during the evening (or in one day).

Cub Scout

Each of these programs meet requirements for electives for each den level – Tiger, Wolf, and Webelos / Arrow of Light.

Tiger Den
Tiger Tales, Adventure Requirement #7

Tiger scouts are welcomed into the Buggy Museum’s Visitor Center where we introduce William and Anna Heiss.  William was a buggy maker in Mifflinburg, his wife Anna worked with him.  We’ll talk about the family, look at some of the things that belonged to them and other objects that the Museum collects.  The scouts will spend about 30 minutes at the Museum.  Scouts are welcome to do their opening and closing at the Museum, a U.S. flag is available for use.  The fee for this program is $1.00 per scout.

Wolf Den
Paws on the Path, Adventure Requirement #6
Finding Your Way, Adventure Elective

Using the map provided, Scouts can explore the historic district of Mifflinburg, learning directions through the cardinal points.  This program can be used for either adventure. There is no fee for this program.

Webelos / Arrow of Light Dens

Art Explosion

We will provide “display” space for any art work produced by scouts. (Requirement #4)  The art work will be on display for 30 days, there is no fee, nor admission to see the art work.  It is available during regular Museum hours.

Looking Back, Looking Forward

We have shoe box digs to learn about archeology that can be borrowed for your Gathering activity for meeting 2.  There is a $10.00 security deposit, which is returned upon the return of the shoe box.

Boy Scout

The Mifflinburg Buggy Museum can help with both rank advancements and specific merit badges.  The Museum also maintains a list of Eagle rank worthy projects.

Tenderfoot Rank Advancement

  • 7b. Participate in a total of one hour of service in one or more service projects approved by your Scoutmaster. Explain how your service to others relates to the Scout slogan and Scout motto.

Second Class Rank Advancement

  • 8e. Participate in two hours of service through one or more service projects approved by your Scoutmaster. Explain how your service to others relates to the Scout Oath.

First Class Rank Advancement

  • 9d. Participate in three hours of service through one or more service projects approved by your Scoutmaster. The project(s) must not be the same service project(s) used for Tenderfoot requirement 7b and Second Class

Eagle Rank Requirement

  • 5. While a Life Scout, plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, any school, or your community. (The project must benefit an organization other than the Boy Scouts of America.) A project proposal must be approved by the organization benefiting from the effort, your Scoutmaster and unit committee, and the council or district before you start. You must use the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook, BSA publication No. 512-927, in meeting this requirement. Citizenship in the Community

Do the following:

  • 7a. Identify three charitable organizations outside of Scouting that interest you and bring people in your community together to work for the good of your community.
  • 7b. Pick ONE of the organizations you chose for requirement 7a. Using a variety of resources (including newspapers, fliers and other literature, the Internet, volunteers, and employees of the organization), find out more about this organization.
  • 7c. With your counselor's and your parent's approval, contact the organization you chose for requirement 7b, and find out what young people can do to help. While working on this merit badge, volunteer at least eight hours of your time for the organization. After your volunteer experience is over, discuss what you have learned with your counselor.

Citizenship in the Nation

  • 2a. Visit a place that is listed as a National Historic Landmark or that is on the National Register of Historic Places. Tell your counselor what you learned about the landmark or site and what you found interesting about it.

American Heritage

  • 2. Do TWO of the following:
  • a. Select two individuals from American history, one a political leader (a president, senator, etc.) and the other a private citizen (a writer, religious leader, etc.). Find out about each person’s accomplishments and compare the contributions each has made to America’s heritage.
  • b. With your counselor’s approval, choose an organization that has promoted some type of positive change in American society. Find out why the organization believed this change was necessary and how it helped to accomplish the change. Discuss how this organization is related to events or situations from America’s past.
  • 4. Do TWO of the following:
  • a. Explain what is meant by the National Register of Historic Places. Describe how a property becomes eligible for listing. Make a map of your local area, marking the points of historical interest. Tell about any National Register properties in your area. Share the map with your counselor, and describe the historical points you have indicated.
  • b. Research an event of historical importance that took place in or near your area. If possible, visit the place. Tell your counselor about the event and how it affected local history. Describe how the area looked then and what it now looks like.
  • c. Find out when, why, and how your town or neighborhood started, and what ethnic, national, or racial groups played a part. Find out how the area has changed over the past 50 years and try to explain why.
  • d. Take an active part in a program about an event or person in American history. Report to your counselor about the program, the part you took, and the subject.
  • e. Visit a historic trail or walk in your area. After your visit, share with your counselor what you have learned. Discuss the importance of this location and explain why you think it might qualify for National Register listing.
